Retail Customer Service – How to Compliment Your Customer

Sales professional
o Why should I give compliments? There’s no sense in it!
o Is the store the right place for compliments?
o I don’t know how to give compliments

Compliments are kind, pleasant words — an honest and positive response to someone’s pleasing characteristics. Don’t confuse compliments with flattery — flattery, unlike a compliment, is characterized by hypocrisy and obsequiousness. It often sounds rough and phony. Everyone likes to receive compliments — they benefit not only the people who receive them, but also the ones who give them.

Giving compliments is the same as presenting gifts. A compliment is an easy way to establish a personal relationship as it satisfies the customer’s need for positive emotions and feelings. The compliment should be sincere, short and be based on real facts. Each compliment should be unique to the person, and you must pay careful attention to the age and gender of the person you want to acknowledge.

You can’t go wrong giving a compliment to a regular customer. For example, you might compliment how they look: “You always look great/in such good shape” or “you’re very stylish,” or you may compliment various details in their appearance (“you have a beautiful smile”) or their clothes (“what a beautiful blouse,” or “great tie!”). You could also praise the person in the following way: “It’s always nice to talk to you,” or “It’s great to have such a pleasant customer.”

There are certain rules to giving compliments. The key components of a compliment are sincerity and belief in what you are praising. The slightest element of falseness is instantly felt and perceived as mocking. If you are not confident about what you are praising – don’t say it.

Customers’ opinions
– Compliments show goodwill
– It’s pleasant to hear nice words
– I always come back to a store where the staff compliment me
– A compliment charges me up for the rest of the day. Positive feelings are important for all of us!

“If people did not compliment one another there would be little society.” Vauvenargues Marquis
