In a speech Thursday, previous Vice President Mike Pence broke from President Donald Trump by expressing he did his constitutional duty when he led the certification of the election effects.
At the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California, Pence defended his actions on January 6, the day a professional-Trump mob breached the Capitol and compelled lawmakers to evacuate. Some customers of the mob considered the vice president could end the certification, as Trump experienced claimed, and were being chanting: “Hang Mike Pence.”
“Now there are those people in our celebration who feel that in my situation as presiding officer around the joint session that I possessed the authority to reject or return electoral votes accredited by the states,” Pence mentioned. “But the Structure supplies the vice president with no these types of authority right before the joint session of Congress.”

Pence, who is found as a potential GOP candidate for the 2024 presidential election, has mostly avoided hitting back at the previous president, inspite of Trump continuing to specific disappointment in Pence, Insider’s Tom LoBianco reported.
Some Trump supporters still criticize Pence for certifying the election for President Joe Biden. He was greeted with boos and calls of “traitor” when he spoke at a conservative conference in Florida past 7 days. 1 Republican close to Pence instructed LoBianco Pence was “stung” by the incident.
Days later, Trump reiterated his feelings, expressing he was “disappointed” that Pence certified the election and that he thought Pence experienced a preference in the certification.
Pence also mentioned in his speech Thursday that while he felt he did his constitutional obligation, he was let down with the outcomes of the election. Neither Pence nor Trump have announced programs to run in 2024.
