Here’s why Amazon’s $30 billion advertising business is so effective

Industry trends, consumer shopping habits, and Amazon’s continued e-commerce dominance have helped turn the tech giant into an advertising behemoth.

The company’s ad business recently surpassed a $30 billion annual run rate in the third quarter. Wall Street expects advertising revenue to eclipse $10 billion for the holiday quarter when Amazon reports earnings Thursday afternoon. (Update: Amazon reported $9.7 billion for “advertising services,” a new section on its earnings release)

Amazon does not break out specific financials for advertising, but its “Other” category primarily includes sales of advertising services. And revenue for that category has skyrocketed over the past few years, now making up more than 7% of Amazon’s total revenue and helping fuel its bottom line given the high profit margins in digital advertising.

Amazon’s advertising arm is eight times as large as Snapchat’s entire business, and nearly seven times as large as Twitter. It

Don’t let scammers steal your Google Business Profile!

This new scam can seriously affect a business’ reputation. If you own a company, watch out for scammers trying to steal your Google Business Profile — along with all the good reviews you worked so hard to get.

How the scam works

When you search for a business in Google, information about that company will typically appear in the right sidebar. This is called a Google Business Profile. Alongside basic information, such as address, phone number, and operating hours, there’s a link enabling the business owner to claim and edit the profile. Unfortunately, it’s also an opportunity for scammers.

Scammers click the “Own this business?” link, which sends a request email to the current owner. If you or someone in your company approves this request, thinking it is legitimate, the scammer can take over your profile. They will likely change the name of your business and lock you out of

EirGrid poised to name new suppliers for electricity generation

National grid operator EirGrid is poised to name new players seeking to enter the Irish electricity market on Friday.

The Single Electricity Market Committee – made up of regulators on both sides of the Border – recently sought offers from electricity generators to build new power plants to begin providing energy in 2024-2025 to head off a likely shortage.

It is understood that several new players will be named among the companies that successfully bid to build power plants here when EirGrid confirms the results.

No one connected with the process has named the successful bidders, but several sources say the list is likely to include significant new entrants to the electricity generation market.

While all generators were welcome to make offers, most of the new generation recruited in the T-3 auction will be gas fired.

Electricity suppliers, who buy power from generators at wholesale prices to sell on to

192 Spines on Poles Found in Peru, Maybe Linked to Pillaged Graves

  • Researchers discovered 192 examples of spines threaded onto reeds in a remote part of Peru.
  • It took place some 500 years ago, when Europeans were opening native tombs to seek gold and silver.
  • The practice may have been a ritual response to graves being pillaged, an expert told Insider.

People in the Chincha valley of Peru threaded the spines of the dead onto wooden rods around 500 years ago, a mostly-unknown practice only recently documented by archaeologists.

It may have been an attempt to restore the bodies of the dead during the European colonization, according to a study by the researchers who unearthed 192 examples of such spines. They include the remains of children.

“Our findings suggest that vertebrae-on-posts represent a direct, ritualized, and Indigenous response to European colonialism,” Jacob L. Bongers, lead author of the study and archaeologist from the University of East Anglia, UK,
